Isopods, also known as woodlice or pillbugs, are fascinating crustaceans originating from diverse environments including marine, freshwater, and terrestrial habitats. They possess a distinctive rigid, segmented exoskeleton with seven pairs of jointed legs and two pairs of antennae, giving them a unique flattened appearance. Typically, they range in size from very small to large deep-sea species. Their temperament is generally non-aggressive, making them suitable for various ecosystems where they play a critical role in decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients. Isopods thrive in moist environments such as soil, leaf litter, or under logs and require special care regarding humidity to ensure their survival on land. Known for their ability to roll into a ball for protection, some, like the pillbug, are often referred to by their nicknames "roly-poly" or "slaters" within the UK. These adaptable creatures are excellent for natural pest control in gardens and terrariums, highlighting their suitability for ecological balance in the United Kingdom.
