Their fleece, which is finer than cashmere, comes in 22 natural colours and is sheared annually to yield 1.5-2.5 kg of wool. Alpacas are social herd animals known for their gentle temperament and communicate through humming, though they might spit when threatened. Typically living 15-20 years, they are efficient grazers with soft padded feet that minimise environmental damage.
