The New Zealand Rabbit is, despite its name, an entirely American breed, developed in California in the early 20th century — possibly from stock imported from New Zealand, which gave the breed its misleading title. The breed exists in five colours recognised by the American Rabbit Breeders Association: white, red, black, blue, and broken. The white variety, with its distinctive pink eyes, is by far the most common and has historically been the most widely used in commercial rabbit keeping due to its fast growth rate and excellent meat-to-bone ratio. They are sociable, easy to handle when raised with regular interaction, and generally hardy and robust in health. Their short, dense coat requires only occasional brushing.
