Pygmy Hedgehog Rodents for sale in Abingdon, Oxfordshire

The African Pygmy Hedgehog, often simply called the Pygmy Hedgehog, originates from central and eastern Africa, inhabiting savannas and grasslands. This small breed typically measures 6-9 inches and weighs between 250-600 grams. Its distinctive physical traits include short, stiff spines covering its back and soft fur on the face and belly. Colour variations range from salt-and-pepper to albino.

Temperament-wise, the Pygmy Hedgehog is primarily nocturnal and solitary, favouring a quiet environment and gentle handling. Known for their shy and sensitive nature, they exhibit unique behaviours such as self-anointing and curling into a spiny ball when threatened. Due to their specific needs, they are best suited to owners prepared for dedicated care.

Care requirements include maintaining a warm habitat (75-80°F) to prevent hibernation attempts, providing a high-protein insectivore diet, and ensuring daily exercise via a running wheel. These hedgehogs make interesting pet hedgehogs in the UK but require commitment, particularly in temperature control and specialist veterinary care. Keywords like "pygmy hedgehog for sale," "pet hedgehog UK," and "African pygmy hedgehog" are popular search terms related to this breed.
