This is Cooper, my pineapple conure. Their exact age is unknown. I got Cooper in August 2022, and the shop I bought them from had obtained them from another breeder who believed they were approximately 6–10 months old at the time. I have therefore always estimated that Cooper is around 4–5 years old, with their birthday being roughly around November.
Cooper’s sex has never been confirmed. I never felt the need to have them DNA tested, as I always intended to keep them as a companion rather than breed or pair them.
Cooper has been an amazing pet and a very valued member of my flock. They love cuddles and head scratches and, like many conures, can also be nippy and selective about who they trust. Throughout the time I have had Cooper, they have generally only allowed me or my dad to handle them, whether that is stepping up, being picked up or having cuddles. They will therefore need someone patient who understands that earning a parrot’s trust can take time.
I also want to be completely transparent about a previous injury. In 2023, a very fine piece of thread from one of their fabric hideaways became wrapped around their foot. Initially, we believed that their foot was infected because the thread was extremely difficult to see. Unfortunately, the injury required surgery under anaesthetic. As a result, one of their feet has a permanent deformity, which can be seen in some of the photographs where one of their toes/talons slightly overlaps another.
Their affected foot is weaker than the other, but Cooper has adapted extremely well. They climb, perch and balance without any real difficulty, including balancing comfortably on one foot, and it does not prevent them from living a normal and active life. After what happened, they have never been given another fabric or fluffy hideaway.
The reason I am looking to rehome Cooper is entirely because of changes in my lifestyle and circumstances. I can no longer give them the amount of attention and companionship that I believe they deserve. As Cooper is my only conure, I am particularly conscious that I cannot always provide the level of social interaction they need.
More recently, after I returned from a nine-day holiday in early July, I also noticed a change in our bond. Combined with me increasingly relying on my dad to spend time with and care for Cooper, I have had to accept that my circumstances are no longer ideal for them. This is not a decision I have made lightly, and I have no desire to simply “get rid” of them.
I am not asking for money for Cooper. My priority is finding the right person and the right home.
Ideally, I would like Cooper to go to someone who already has good experience with conures or parrots and understands their behaviour, needs and the commitment involved in caring for them. I would also be very happy for Cooper to go to an appropriate home with other birds, particularly as they originally lived in a larger cage with other conures before I brought them home.
Cooper can also come with their black metal cage, if wanted. It is suitable for a small parrot such as a conure or cockatiel.
I care deeply about where Cooper goes, so I will want to speak properly with anyone interested about their experience, home environment and plans for Cooper. My only concern is making sure that a much-loved member of my flock goes to a safe, knowledgeable and permanent home where they will receive the time, care and attention they deserve.
