The recommended number of cichlids depends on species and tank size; overcrowding is often suggested for African cichlids as it diffuses aggression by making territorial defence difficult. Large and aggressive cichlids generally require very large tanks to coexist peacefully, and tank setups should be tailored to the species to avoid conflict.

Cichlids are usually not ideal for average community tanks due to their territorial and species-specific aggression. However, a few species can live in community setups if carefully selected, provided the aquarium is large with visual barriers and suitable tank mates of similar size and temperament. Aggression tends to be more severe toward conspecifics or similar-looking fish, so mixing distinctly different species can help reduce conflicts.

Cichlids vary widely in size depending on the species, ranging from small dwarf types just a few inches long to larger species like Oscars and peacock bass that can grow 10-12 inches or more.
