About Parker
Parker is a young, happy hound mix from Cyprus who is currently living in a foster home in Duns. He’s now around 18 months old and has all the energy, enthusiasm and playfulness you’d expect from a large adolescent dog. Sadly, he wasn’t the right fit for his previous home, but his foster carer describes him as a confident, good-natured companion who is still learning the ropes but has so much potential in a home better suited to his temperament.
Parker is a mixture of silly and sweet. He’s a playful boy who enjoys the simple things in life: stretching out in the grass, sniffing the world around him, and galloping around in open space. He is housetrained, sleeps well through the night, and is generally quiet at home. Although Parker has only been in the UK since the 20th July, it’s evident that he’s looking for a more outdoorsy home with a secure garden, something that unfortunately he doesn’t have currently.
Parker absolutely loves attention and is very affectionate with people he knows. He can be a little wary of strangers at first but it doesn’t take him long to warm up once he knows there’s nothing to worry about. He is very food motivated but has only started entry level training and would benefit from someone continued work and focus. He has started learning “sit” and “leave it” and is beginning to pick up what’s expected of him, but needs high value treats and short bursts of training to keep his focus!
Typical of many hounds, Parker has a high prey drive and loves to follow his nose. We would suggest tapping into his natural instinct and exploring activities such as scent-work or man-trailing, which he’d be great at. Unfortunately this also means that Parker isn’t suitable for a home with cats or small pets. He doesn’t seem bothered by livestock though.
In the shelter Parker shared his kennel with other dogs and got along well with them. He’s happy enough on his own and definitely a confident boy who enjoys being the centre of attention, but he could live alongside a resident dog too. With unfamiliar dogs he can be a bit standoffish and unsure, but with calm introductions and positive reinforcement he’ll make friends at his own pace.
While he is still young and can be mouthy and rough when playing, Parker is affectionate and loves to interact with people. Due to his size and style of play, a home with young children isn’t quite what we’re looking for, but we’re sure he would make a lovely addition to an adult-only home, or a family with older children. Parker would love a home with a secure garden where he can play, sniff and watch the world go by. He needs structure, regular exercise and continued training, and would thrive with someone who understands hounds and their quirks.
Parker has started learning how to enjoy home comforts and feel secure with people. He is a lovely young dog with a lot to offer, and with patience, routine and plenty of adventures, he will make a wonderful companion.
