Description
Gertie is a fun-loving, energetic, cuddly 5 year old lurcher who we've had since a puppy.
Sadly, her reactivity to a few dogs in our neighborhood has become a bit stressful for us, but an experienced dog owner, with the right home, familiar with lurchers might be be able to get the best out of her for many years to come.
If you're looking for a simple dog with no issues at all, please stop reading now.
Gertie's main issue is reactivity to neighbour's dogs. Away from home she is much better behaved and can walk past many dogs, rarely with any issues. She also goes out with a dog walker once a week, with a variety of dogs, on and off lead, again without any issues at all.
She's not great in cafes or pubs and is likely to react to dogs in that situation.
She travels very well in the car as long as her view from the window is obscured, again, she can react to passing dogs, cats etc. This is the same for indoors, although she is better behaved since she was prescribed meds for anxiety. However these meds may not be needed in the right home.
It's difficult to say if she would be ok with other dogs in the household, so I would probably advise against that. She loves people and is always excited to meet someone new. She seems to get along with children ok, but our experience of this is limited. Older children that are not as boisterous as younger ones would be fine.
Due to her prey drive, she 100% could not live with a cat!
We live in a very rural location, it's a very quiet house and we feel this might be part of the problem; anything that might stimulate Gertie (noises, the sight of another dog, the front door) really stands out and can be fixated on. We feel that a busier household, perhaps in a town or village, might serve her better.
We have had the input of a behaviourist to address her reactivity and can supply you with their report, and their recommended training program - I doubt much of it will be a surprise for any experience dog owner.
She is very playful, funny, goofy, and loves to sleep. A secure garden with a high fence would be ideal so she can run about. Her high prey drive and questionable recall means she is generally better on-lead, we prefer to use a 10m lead on the beach which exhausts her in 5 minutes. We also use nearby dog parks so she can reach her full speed once in a while. But generally, a run in the garden and 2 x 30min walks per day seem to be enough for her.
Her general health is excellent, apart from the odd cut or bruise, there have not been any issues.
We're based in East Lothian, Scotland. We are determined to find her the right home, and really don't want to send her to a kennel. So we would like a prospective owner to meet Gertie at home and we would also like to visit your home too. We'd be willing to re-home her within a certain radius; Edinburgh, Lothians, Northumberland, Scottish Borders etc.
Anyone wanting a lurcher to hunt, is not welcome.
We would include a large crate in which she sleeps and night - and is trained to go into while we eat.
