Description

Mimi the beagle cross, at just 5 months old, is adorable, lively, playful and cuddly, with little legs Currently 10.5kilos and expected to be around 13 kilos fully grown This is what her foster mum has to say about her. Mimi is a 5-month old puppy that’s discovering the world and thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread. She loves life, food, hugs, zoomies, dogs, toys… actually, there’s little Mimi doesn’t love and she’s not shy about telling you when she doesn’t. She doesn’t believe in suffering in silence. Mimi adores walks. Lead walking is work in progress but she’s learned the basics and isn’t a strong puller. She walks off lead in safe areas and loves exploring on her own or doing zoomies and running around with her friends, but does not go too far and checks where I am, quickly changing direction to follow my lead. Her recall isn’t perfect but she can be left off the lead at the park and will stay back and run to me when called when her friends leave. You just need to allow a few extra minutes to put her back on the lead as this little girl does not want adventures to end. She likes chasing birds but it’s more puppy fun than strong prey instinct. She barks at the neighbour’s cat if she sees him on our fence, but she could live with a bold cat with guidance. She has met guinea pigs and, whilst she found them fascinating, she could be distracted. Mimi will occasionally bark at dogs and people to alert, but will quickly make friends. She’s recently discovered that strangers are wonderful and may run to greet them but has learned not to jump and repeated exposure will help her greet more calmly. At home, Mimi isn’t a puppy that will lie quietly unless she’s asleep or having cuddles. She needs something to do or she’ll seek her own entertainment, usually involving things she shouldn’t. She’ll also counter surf, given the chance, and even though she’ll desist if you say No, she doesn’t think it still applies a minute later. Toys and chews are a great way to keep her away from less desirable objects-like shoes. She’s a natural retriever and her fetch is impressive. Her attention span is limited, however, and she soon moves on to the next thing. Although she’s doing well as an only dog with daily playdates, she’d do brilliantly with another friendly dog or two that can match her energy. Mimi is very gentle and affectionate with people. And did I mention she loves being hugged? She still does some affectionate puppy nibbling very occasionally if your face is at her level, but it’s minimal, can be redirected easily and is slowly fading. She’s curious and friendly with children but hasn’t had much contact yet. Mimi welcomes everybody into the house after a couple of barks to alert that something’s up. She’s a bit more wary of men but makes friends easily. She’s also very welcoming to dogs and after the initial puppy exuberance, she’s a very good reader of body language. With sensible introductions, she accepts other dogs in her space, can eat peacefully nearby (although will cheekily try to take their food if allowed) and is very tolerant in play. She complains loudly if the other dog doesn’t share a toy but doesn’t take liberties. Mimi is house trained. Although this is slowly changing, at the moment, she prefers using the garden rather than relieving herself on walks and takes herself out using a flap door without prompt. In the evenings she sleeps in a dog bed downstairs or in her crate (always open) in the landing, whatever’s closest to me. We keep a couple of toys in her crate for her to entertain herself if she wakes up and this has worked very well. Mimi knows Sit, Down and Wait but obedience doesn’t come naturally to pup so this will need to be reinforced in her new home. She responds to very short training sessions and lots of patience. She needs some time to make the right decision, lots of repetition and interruptions for games and cuddles. She’s a pro at waiting patiently for her treats once you get her to sit or lie down and she’s doing very well with Stay. At home she sits nicely for her food and for her collar and lead before going out. She’ll also wait in the hallway for you to take everything back off if you tell her to. Barking is clearly a predominant feature in Mimi’s makeup but as she does it primarily to communicate with her people and it’s triggered by new things, it is possible to minimise it by showing her each time that she has been listened to and that everything’s ok. Over time, the barking is reduced, even if other dogs bark! Mimi has been left on her own for up to half an hour after her walk and playtime. She sometimes barks initially for a couple of minutes. She doesn’t get particularly distressed but clearly doesn’t like it and during my absence has divided her time between the windowsill and the front door. On one occasion she rearranged the shoes in the hallway. Whoever adopts this adorable whirlwind will need patience, energy and humour but the joy, laughter and heart melting cuddles she brings are worth every second. Mimi is fully vaccinated, blood tests including Brucella Canis, microchip, healthy and she must have a secured garden, any children must be over 5 years old as she is a lively puppy, and preferably another playful dog companion
