Description
Sunnie is a 10-month-old male Labrador who is half working line and half show line. We viewed both of his parents when we bought him, and as far as we know he is full Labrador (he is not KC registered). Sunnie has a very distinctive white stripe down his face, which often gets people asking questions, but we think it just makes him extra special. He has been a much-loved member of our family and this decision has not been made lightly.
Unfortunately, we don’t feel Sunnie is the right fit for our family long term. Our three-year-old daughter has started showing signs of being scared of him due to his high energy, excitement levels, and difficulty settling. Sunnie is a very active, hyper dog who can struggle with overarousal and overstimulation, and he needs an experienced home that has the time, space, and patience to continue his training and help him learn how to settle.
Sunnie knows basic commands including sit, stay, wait, and can be left alone for up to around four hours. His biggest areas for improvement are recall, lead walking, jumping up at people, and learning calmer greetings. When he gets excited, he can bark and jump because he wants to say hello and play rather than showing aggression. He can also become mouthy and nip at hands and arms when overexcited, which is something we’ve tried to work on but he needs a lot more training with this. This has been possibly our biggest struggle.
On walks, he can become overly enthusiastic around people and other dogs and may lunge to try and engage socially or play. He is not aggressive, but he can be a lot for some dogs and people due to his excitement levels. Because of this, we think he would suit owners who understand energetic young Labradors and have experience with training and boundaries.
Sunnie currently lives with a cat and does well in that environment. We also believe he could live happily with another dog, potentially one of a similar size and energy level. He is good with children but enjoys them a little too much for younger children, so we feel he would be better suited to a home with older children or adults.
This is an incredibly difficult decision for us as Sunnie is loved deeply and we want the very best for him. We believe with the right people, consistency, and training, he has the potential to grow into an amazing dog. We are in no rush to rehome him and he remains safe and settled with us while we look for the right match. Sunnie is vaccinated, flea and worm treated, microchipped, and has been vet checked within the last six months. Sunnie has not been neutered.
