Description
Handsome Oscar is 29 month old, 31kg, intact male shepherd mix. Rescued from Cyprus, his DNA says he is mostly Malinois x Caucasian Shepherd with some GSD, however his appearance and characteristics suggest he may be Dutch Shepherd mix. He is a happy, friendly chap who gets a lot of attention in public due to his brindle coat and distinctive looks.
Oscar is wonderfully behaved in the home, where he is calm, crate and toilet trained, non destructive and has no issues over food or toy protection. He loves his humans and is dog friendly. He sleeps all night, chills out on the sofa in the day and is affectionate with his owner, visitors and neighbours. He is a natural boundary guardian and will let you know if anyone comes near the property.
He is excellent in the car and often likes to have a sleep on the back seat, when stationary on the drive. He can also be left happily in the car when shopping or during appointments.
Oscar is an athletic, energetic dog, who requires a good amount of regular daily exercise in all weathers and he loves to play games and have a run, so a large, escape proof garden and lots of walks/runs is essential. He walks well on his leash and is used to busy public places so he is well socialised with other dogs and humans.
He is a rough and tumble, country boy whose favourite place is open fields, where he loves to sniff, dig and explore. Oscar is a super intelligent and alert dog, with heightened sense of smell, sight and hearing. He notices everything around him and is very aware of his surroundings. He is used to being near horses and cattle, which he is curious about. He is cautious with sheep and needs more assimilation with them. His primary drive is scenting and when around wildlife; birds and small wild animals he has an intense focus making his recall unreliable, consequently he needs to be on leash or long line at all times until the time when he is further trained to be sufficiently reliable. He is having ongoing recall training in controlled environments and is generally very good, but fails when distracted, so more work is needed in this area.
Oscar is still young and energetic and likes to be independent. He needs an owner who is used to large working breeds or experienced with dog training , so he can look up to them as they give him the level obedience training and engagement he requires. He is good with children, but his enthusiasm means an only an adult home would be suitable. He is an ideal property guardian and has potential for other kinds of work including scenting and even dog sports. He would thrive in the company of another stable balanced dog who he can play with and give him guidance. His potential is enormous and in the right environment, with the right owner, who can give him the time and dedication he deserves, he will be an amazing lifetime companion.
He is currently adopted in a loving home, but he has a small garden and his retired owner is struggling to exercise him. He is a very special dog who is looking for a very special home.
Additional information:
Oscar has only lived in quiet places with little neighbourhood activity. Due to his protection instincts he reacts to sounds of people and cars outside the property perimeter both during the day and night, therefore an ideal home will be a quiet a location.
