Description

This is Rolo, our 2 year old Silver (he just looks like a chocolate) Labrador Retriever. We're looking (and praying) for a professional dog trainer who will take him in and help him with his aggression issues before we have no option but to put him to sleep. Rolo's story We bought Rolo as a puppy. He's KC-registered and a pedigree retriever. As a puppy, we socialised him around people and other dogs, and he was fine, if not a little boisterous, with dogs and people. Rolo's problems began while he was still very much a young puppy. He used to gulp his food down so quickly that his back legs used to lift into the air, which we thought was cute at the time. Little did we know that cuteness would eventually lead to a severe resource guarding problem, something we had never heard of before, despite having previously owned dogs. We first discovered he had resource guarding while trying to help him dislodge food from his bowl when he struck and bit without warning, biting me. His resource guarding has gradually gotten worse, and he has begun guarding sofa cushions, toys, and other items, as well as his food. We took Rolo to a dog behaviourist, which cost quite a bit of money. They told us it was a discipline problem and focused the training on discipline, but it had little effect. We then had a second dog behaviourist, who gave us training tips and tasks to help with his resource guarding, but it didn't really help much. Eventually, he's gotten worse, reacting aggressively and randomly, including a harsh bite on my partner and drawing blood, and growling at commands to get down or go to bed and at anyone who tries to touch him. We contacted the behaviourist again, who suggested we get him checked out by a vet for pain, as dogs often hide it. He appeared responsive to touch and won't let anyone touch him except his mum and me. We took Rolo to a vet who did a pain exam and said he was fine. She suggested we try medication, and if that didn't work, then we should euthanise him. The vet prescribed gabapentin and Trazodone. We started with the medication, but it just made him completely drowsy and unwell, so we didn't continue with it. Last week, my partner went to stop him from heading to the door, and he turned on her and bit her as she grabbed him, and then I had to drag him to the floor, where he bit me too, but calmed down quickly. I now have a dog that my partner is terrified of, and is on the verge of being put to sleep, and is too unpredictable and unsafe to keep around my family. If it were just me, it wouldn't be a problem. Despite all of the above, Rolo is extremely needy; he loves attention (from his mum and me) and loves to play-fight, go for long walks, and chase balls. He's a typical goofball Labrador, 80% brilliant, 20% daemon. He's fully house-trained and doesn't destroy household items (apart from slippers and tv remotes). He will do the basic commands, sit, lay down, stay, paw etc. His recall is often fantastic and then often terrible. Before I do the unthinkable and take him to be euthanised, I thought I would try and post here in the slim hope that a professional trainer out there will be willing to give him a second chance with some proper training and rehome him. We've spent over £1000 on behaviourists, and he's obviously beyond our level of care. I will not allow Rolo to just to go anyone, and any interested party must match the following criteria: 1. No children, it's too risky to have him around children, although he has never shown aggression to any. 2. Must have a profession within dog care and have experience with resource guarding, and a full understand what it is and just how dangerous it can be. 3. No other dogs, as he gets older, he is becoming less tolerant of other dogs, which is a shame, as he used to love playing with other dogs. Losing Rolo is obviously going to be heartbreaking, but the thought of ending his life is making me feel physically sick; he's our baby after all. We're not looking for money for him, and he comes with a cage, toys, lead and harness etc, we just want him to go to someone who can help him, and give him a chance of a good life with proper training. Again, we will not just hand him over to anyone; there are too many evil people in this world. If anyone knows of any Behaviourists that might be looking to take on a new dog, please, please let them know, I desperately don't want to euthanise him.
