Description
Eric is a 10 month old Dalmatian Puppy who loves human contact! He would love nothing more than to be attached to you all day every day if he could, he’s the most affectionate dog I’ve ever met.
We have unfortunately come a decision that Eric would be better suited as an only dog in a household. He has lived with our 2 year old female Lab (Olive) since he was 9 weeks old and although they get on generally, there’s no real love there.
Eric is also very much hitting puberty, which means that he is becoming quite territorial and can get be quite grumpy when Olive is nearby when there is any food involved or he is in a cosy environment or having cuddles. He has been known to growl and snap on the odd occasion at Olive. We have done various types of training with him to rectify this but unfortunately it works some days and not on others. He has also started to hump Olive a lot despite her being spayed and this is becoming an issue.
He has never shown any aggression towards other dogs outside of the house, we have tried him in off lead parks with friends dogs and no issues. He does bark at some dogs if he is on the lead on a road walk or in the park but once he is allowed to say hello, he stops. He also goes to daycare from time to time and doesn’t have any concerns with other dogs there.
Unfortunately after speaking to the vets and discussing our concerns, they are unwilling to neuter him until he is much older given that he is a large breed. If he was our only dog then this wouldn’t be an issue but given that he isn’t, we are worried that his behaviour will escalate while we wait the extra 9-12 months until they are willing to.
He lives with 3 children aged 10, 9 and 9 and other than being excitable and a bit jumpy when they first come into the house or down in the morning, he gets on well with them. Given his grumpy behaviour with Olive around dinner time though, we keep the children at a distance when he is eating as a precaution. I do feel this is more provoked by a dog being in the house rather than humans being around but I’d rather be overly cautious.
He has had some off lead time in normal parks and recall is mostly good, it will sometimes depends on how high value the treat is. Walking on the lead is generally quite good, although he can pull excitedly for the first 5-10 minutes of his walk, he will then usually remember his manners.
Eric has had all of his vaccinations, including Kennel Cough. He is up to date with both Flee and Worm treatment.
He can be left during the day for periods of time, we trialled up to 4 hours and he’s been ok, if we have ever needed any longer than that we have sent him to daycare. He was previously crated however we have recently been leaving him in the lounge at night and when we are out and checked back in on the cameras, as long as he has a nice cosy bed and blanket, he’s been happily snoozing in that.
We originally got Eric from a breeder, we met mum and she had a lovely temperament, dad was a stud so we only saw pictures of him.
This is a really difficult decision for us as a family, we really do love having Eric around but feel it would be better for both him to live as an only dog. We would love for him to go to a home that can offer him the most pampered, solo dog lifestyle we think we deserves.
