Description

Cerberus was my ex’s dog, and I was somehow left with him in the breakup. I love him with all my heart and he’s an amazing dog. He protects me by bravely barking at the door when he sees someone, but he still listens when I call him over and he goes wherever anyone in the house tells him. He tries very hard to be obedient and he loves learning new things. He’s a fetch-aholic and his favourite toy is a tyre which he just learned how to roll. He loves to watch how many times his ball bounces too. The reason that I’m looking for a better fit even though it breaks my heart is that I’m moving into my camper van full time and I don’t think it will suit him very well. He loves his garden above all and he checks the perimeters regularly. He’s protective but not to the point where you can’t have friends over. We had a decent size gathering for my ex’s birthday and Cerberus made a lot of new friends. He got used to people coming in very quickly and didn’t bark at everyone. I feel that he would be happier in a home with a routine, and I can’t offer that. He’s fine with other dogs although not typically interested in befriending them. He may bark is he sees a dog but he doesn’t go over. I have a female German shepherd who I had before Cerberus lived here. Cerberus thinks the world of her and he would be able to get along well with other larger breeds. He’s a little boisterous so I wouldn’t like to place him in a home with fragile smaller dogs or children. He has those GSD crocodile jaws so don’t feed him from your hand if he’s excited, throw the treat! He would never ever do any harm intentionally, he’s truly a big goof. I’ve always said that he’s very intelligent and loyal and he would have been a good police dog. He doesn’t like being away from his owner. He’s ok in the house where he knows how it works but I’ve left him in the car or camper van briefly and he gets upset. I believe he would do great in a home either as an only dog or with another large breed, with people who have a solid routine. He’s crate trained but I don’t currently have a crate for him. My other dog doesn’t like the crate and I like to treat them both the same. His favourite time of day is any time he’s with you. He’s extremely healthy and strong and generally an excellent example of the breed (everyone compliments him!). If I had to pick one thing for him to work on it would be he needs to relax more! This is why I think a decent routine would be a lot better for him. GSDs are extremely intelligent and it would do him good if he knew what to expect. I’ll be in my camper van in a different place every day, walking, eating, drinking on no fixed schedule. He’s very calm when he has a routine. His bark is scary to people who don’t know him, which I also like because I feel very safe at home in an area where there have been several break-ins (not this house!) I’m trying not to think of this as a sad departure but to be excited for his next chapter in a home where he can thrive.
