Description
Teddy is a very large dog who is 5 years old. He needs a home with adopters who are experienced in large breeds and/or guardian breeds. He can live with calm cats and some other dogs (but there will be some management to put into place initially, surrounding food times). Teddy needs to be in an adult home with no children.
This big hunk of a dog is currently in foster and living in a rural setting with a lovely big garden. His most ideal new home would be very similar including 5.5ft – 6ft fencing as he can easily jump over a 4ft fence.
He has previously lived with cats, but doesn’t live with them at present. Any cats in his home need to be chilled and calm.
Teddy lives with lots of other dogs at present, and plays well with most dogs. He is quite a sassy boy and enjoys running around and being playful. However, he does not like male dogs much bigger than Labrador size, and particularly if they have a ball obsession.
Teddy is a guardian breed and will want to protect you and the home you live in. He will love you unconditionally, but your visitors will be strangers to him and he will want to protect you! His fosterer knows exactly the steps to take to manage visitors to the household and, as long as these steps are followed every time, it is straightforward to manage. His foster mum says she, “can introduce people to him easily.”
Due to all his fur, he will need a home with a cool spot where he can get away from the heat. He is toilet trained and takes treats very well. At first, he will certainly need to eat separately from other dogs, because he’ll try to steal the food of other dogs he doesn’t know well.
Teddy loves his walks. However, he can sometimes be reactive to cars, and he is a big strong boy!! Therefore, quiet rural walks are much calmer and easier to manage for all.
We really must emphasise that he is a BIG dog, and he really will need guardians in his life who can understand and manage his breed type and traits. They will need to be calmly assertive with him, and strong enough to handle him on walks if he should pull.
He does like to chase a squirrel or a deer, so be prepared for the “buckeroo” experience. He is best walked on a slip lead and a harness with an extra loop. That said, he does actually obey his guardians once he has a relationship with them. Once his respect for his confident humans grows, then he wants to please them.
Teddy looks like a giant teddy-bear, and we’ve told you all the reasons why he isn’t like one… But, let’s also tell you why he is like a teddy-bear; he gives the best cuddles (he’ll be the first on your bed once the alarm goes off!). He’ll sit on your lap for fusses (yes, he may think he’s a ‘lap dog’), and he’ll be the most loyal dog you’ve ever known.
Truly, Teddy makes the most wonderful companion. However, please only apply if you feel you understand his needs and requirements. We can support you with all we know about him too.
