Green Bean Stick Insects, Diapherodes Gigantea, are gorgeous vibrant-green stick insects affectionately named for their resemblance to green bean pods.
Basic Care for Giant Green Bean Stick Insects (Diapherodes gigantea)
House your new pets in a well ventilated plastic or net enough height for them to moult easily. For Diapherodes gigantea this should be at least 40cm as they will need plenty of space when they shed their skins especially for their last moult. Place a few sheets of paper towel on the bottom of the tank to help keep it humid and make sure the temperature is kept between 18 and 28C.
Provide them with lengths of Eucalyptus or bramble (blackberry) in jar of water so that they have plenty of fresh leaves to eat and branches to moult from as they grow. Use a water sprayer to give the leaves a light misting of water every day or two as they enjoy drinking the water droplets.
The female stick insect can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime and will simply flick her eggs from the end of her abdomen. The eggs resemble small, brown seeds and will generally hatch within six months if sprayed daily with water. These are eating Eucalyptus but can potentially be weaned onto bramble.
