Description
Hello! I’m Jack - I’m a young, long-legged lad with a big heart and a bit of a wobbly start to life.
I’ve been staying at a very lovely kennel, where kind people have helped me grow in confidence and learn lots of new skills. They say I’ve come such a long way and they’re proud of me. I’m proud of me too.
They love me here, but now it’s time for me to find a home! Maybe a forever home or maybe a foster home to start with, where I can keep blossoming. I want my own people to love and trust, to walk with, play with and learn from. I’ve got so much to give.
My Story (so far):
I was born in Dubai and came to the UK when I was just one year old. I had no rescue group behind me, just a lot of hope and puppy energy. At first I was in a boarding kennel from where I went to my first home where they didn’t understand me. I was still just a big pup, full of energy, needing kindness, training and the freedom to stretch my legs. Instead, I got a lot of telling-off and I was shut in a crate for far too long. I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I tried to say I was scared, confused and frustrated in the only way I knew how...by nipping sometimes...but I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. I just didn’t know how to ask for help. They said I was a “bad dog.” I wasn’t! I was just confused and needing someone to teach me gently.
I went to another home after that which was much kinder and I made a lovely friendship with their Husky. But they also had a big and bouncy young puppy dog who was always in my face which made me feel really tense. Despite how much they loved me, they knew it wasn’t the right match. So they contacted Paws2Freedom and even though they had no space for me at the time, they found a lovely kennel where I could feel safe and begin again.
Since arriving I’ve received nothing but kindness and praise. The people here at the kennels are brilliant and nobody has seen any of those early behaviours. I’ve been doing really well.
One day my friends from Paws2Freedom came to visit, they took me for a walk and told me what a good boy I was.
And guess what? I recently went on a big adventure! I was taken on a long car journey to Paws2Freedom’s vet for a full health check. Everyone said I was a brilliant traveller (I settled down so nicely), and I was so good at the vet too. I just took everything in my stride. The Paws2Freedom people who were with me said they loved spending time with me and I loved being with them. We even shared Pizza! They told me I was a really lovely dog which meant the world to me. That’s the kind of companionship I dream of having all the time.
About Me:
Breed: Saluki x German Shepherd
Age: 2.5 years (DOB: 15.12.2022)
Size: Medium to large, with a slim, athletic build (I’m pretty graceful when I want to be!)
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated & Microchipped: Yes and yes!
Health: No known issues. I’m fit and healthy! My Brucella test came back negative, too!
My Personality:
I’ve got the heart of a German Shepherd - loyal, clever and tuned in to my people. I love learning new things and I really enjoy praise. But I’ve also got a silly, lanky streak (that’s the Saluki in me) and I can make people laugh with my playfulness. Like a typical Saluki I can be a bit aloof at times - but once you’ve got my trust, I’ll follow you anywhere.
I like people. I really do. I just sometimes need a little bit of time with strangers and calm introductions help me feel secure.
I love training sessions, walks in nature and playing with the right kind of doggy friends.
Loud or pushy dogs make me a bit unsure, but I’ve learned that if I can trust my human, I don’t have to deal with it all on my own.
Dogs, Kids & Other Pets:
I get on well with calm, polite dogs and love to play. I’ve lived with dogs before and I’m open to doing that again, as long as they’re not too full-on.
I wouldn’t be comfortable with young children. Teenagers who understand dogs could be a good match.
I haven’t been tested with cats, other little pets or livestock.
Training & Support:
I’ve got good lead manners and respond really well to training. Praise goes a long way with me.
I’ve come a long way from my early days and haven’t nipped in ages, because now people listen when I’m unsure.
I’ll need my new people to continue gently helping me grow, especially when it comes to new places and social situations.
I'm looking for kind, dog-savvy people who understand that rescue dogs like me need a bit of time, patience and consistency. Don’t worry though, my trainer will be right there to help you (free of charge) with settling me in and understanding what helps me feel safe and secure. I really want to do my best, I just need someone who’s willing to meet me halfway.
My Ideal Home:
I’d love a rural or semi-rural home where I can stretch my legs and enjoy peaceful walks.
A nice secure garden would be perfect for playing and relaxing.
I’d like a calm home with people who understand that I’ve been through a lot and just need time and kindness to feel safe. If you’ve had shepherds or similar before, even better!
I might enjoy living with another calm dog too.
What I really need is someone who sees past my wobbly start and believes in the dog I’m becoming.
My Current Location: Devon, UK (kennels)
Could you be the one I’ve been waiting for?
I’ve had a bumpy start, but I know there’s a place for me. Whether you want to foster me and help me along the way, or offer me a forever home right now, I’ll be ready to give you my all.
Love,
Jack 🐾
