Turkish Van Kittens for sale

The Turkish Van is a semi-long-haired cat species that originated in the Lake Van area of Eastern Turkey and is often known simply as "Turks" by their growing band of followers. They are sometimes nicknamed "Turkish Swimming Cat" as it is said that they love to bathe and play in the water during the hot summer months in their homeland. This breed is also famous for its totally unique coat pattern, mainly pure white but with prominent markings on the head and tail, so distinctive that the pattern is even called "Van" in other breeds. They are still relatively rare in the UK, despite being recognised by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) for over 40 years, with less than fifty new registrations in 2010. The Turkish Van should not be confused with the Turkish Angora and the Turkish Vankedisi, both of which are two completely different breeds.

FAQs

Are Turkish Van cats good pets?

Turkish Van cats make good pets due to their friendly, affectionate, and playful nature. They are known to form strong bonds with their families, often choosing one favourite person, and enjoy interactive play including games with water. While they are intelligent and energetic, they tend to be independent and are not typical lap cats, preferring to initiate affection on their own.

How much does a Turkish Van cat cost in the UK?

In the UK, Turkish Van cats typically cost between £500 and £1000, depending on factors such as breeder reputation, pedigree, and age. Adult cats may be less expensive than kittens. It's important to also consider ongoing expenses like healthcare and nutrition when planning for ownership.

Are Turkish Van cats vocal?

Turkish Van cats are moderately vocal, using meaningful meows to communicate their needs without being excessively noisy. They are expressive but generally not known for constant or loud meowing.

How can I identify a Turkish Van cat?

A Turkish Van cat is identifiable by its distinctive mostly white coat with coloured markings primarily on the head and tail. They have large expressive eyes that can be amber, blue, or odd-eyed, and a semi-longhaired, sturdy body. Behaviourally, they love water, are playful and intelligent, and tend to bond closely with one person.
