The Shar Pei is one of the most recognisable breeds in the world thanks to the wrinkles on its face and its blue/black tongue. But the Shar Pei coat is another distinguishing feature of the breed, as it feels quite bristly even though it looks like it should be soft. The Chinese Shar-Pei boasts of being one of the oldest breeds in the world. They were originally bred in their native China for hunting, guarding and herding, although they were often used as fighting dogs.
