The German Pinscher and Doberman are related but distinct breeds. The Doberman is larger, standing 24–28 inches tall and weighing 60–100 pounds, bred primarily as a police and working dog. In contrast, the German Pinscher is smaller, 17–20 inches tall and 25–45 pounds, originally bred for hunting rodents. The Doberman has a more muscular build with erect ears, whereas the German Pinscher may have floppy or erect ears and comes in various coat colours. Temperament-wise, German Pinschers are energetic, intelligent, alert, and sometimes jealous, needing consistent training, while Dobermans are very loyal, intelligent, and protective. German Pinschers are relatively rare and suited to active families, whereas Dobermans are more common and popular as family and guard dogs.
