Description

This is Bear. If you’re looking for a calm and cuddly dog you can take to the pub, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re looking for a fit and sociable dog you can take on a hike, you’re in the wrong place. If you’re looking for a dog you can leave around rowdy kids and frail old people, you’re in the wrong place. Have I put you off? Good. Bear isn’t a dog for everyone, but saying that if his few needs are met, he can be a brilliant dog. Here is Bears whole story, or at least all I know about him. “Bear was found roaming the streets in North Macedonia, he was removed from the streets as his size was scaring the locals, he was then placed in an outdoor enclosed space and was visited by the rescue team and volunteers to be feed and walked” from his ad from the rescuers. This was the case for roughly a year before he was adopted. A lady adopted him, this lady had been refused from all uk based rescues as she was an older woman and in ill health. Bears rescuers either didn’t know this or it wasn’t an issue for them and they allowed her to adopt him. Fast forward to him being brought into England. He got out of the van he’d been travelling in for 3 days straight. He pulled on the lead and right there and then the lady said she didn’t want him. Some local dog walkers and trainers got involve to try and help Bear and the lady but her mind was set and she threatened to dump him outside a shelter. This is when I was introduced to him. On the Tuesday was the first time I saw him along with the walker, he was lovely, very happy to see the walkers as the lady didn’t let him out the house. He did pull abit on the lead but he was full of energy and overwhelmed by his surroundings. On the Wednesday I took my dog to meet him, we introduced them from a distance, gradually getting closer and they were fine, as I was leaving he even jumped into the boot of my car. On the Friday I picked him up and his was mine. He had stayed with this lady for a total of 5 weeks. I let him do his thing at my house, he was stressed but learnt our ways quickly, stopped pulling so much on the lead and I was very impressed with how well he was adapting. I was told it takes around 3 months for a rescue dog to settle and come out of their shell, and round the 3/4 month mark he was showing a more goofy side playing with the family’s dogs, we were really happy for him. He did however start developing a few small issues that have overtime got worse and worse. Bear has sound phobia and needs a lot of space. He doesn’t like to be stepped over, people jumping near him, people standing to close, people running, vans driving past, loud noises, loud cars, loud music, excitement, rowdy children, banging, lighters or fire in general, hosepipes …the list goes on but I’m sure you get the point. At the start he’d get up and move, now he barks, lunges or warns (what looks like he’s going to bite but doesn’t make teeth to skin contact) these things are getting worse because my life is stressful for him. I am a live in carer for my grandma who can be very angry and aggressive, so he is on edge at home. Bear also comes to work with me which also can be stressful for him as we work in a factory which is very loud and he doesn’t have his own space. This leads Bear to be constantly on edge, stressed and scared and therefore is making him more and more reactive. Here are a few examples of his reactivity. What started as just the odd big dog, he now spends most of the time barking at dogs/people and trucks in the car. I through treats in the back to distract him which helps keep his head down but can distract me while driving. My dad was play fighting with my daughter and Bear “bit” is bottom. No mark or pain (this was the only time his teeth have been out in regards to reacting to a human) If he has seen a cat in a certain place once, he will react (pulling on the lead, barking) to it for weeks later. He never used to bother about cats. My daughter jumped near him and he lunged towards her. My brother received good news, jumped up and cheered, he lunged for him. I could go on but again, I’m sure you get the point. Bear is clearly on edge and has no way of distressing. I can’t leave him at home with my grandma for obvious reasons and he’s not happy at work. In my opinion, with the right persons and a relatively stress free environment with a simple routine Bear will be a great dog. Bear loves to be outside, he loves food and he loves love (from select people). He does get on fine with other dogs off lead but barks at some of them on. He does have good dog etiquette (I believe he picked this up from the streets). He doesn’t respond well to being physically handled (sometime he won’t come inside and after bribing fails I would hold his collar to get him inside, he would crouch down to the floor in fear). In all I think Bear has had a rough start to life and I can’t give him the chilled life he needs. Believe him to be around 4 years old and a Karman cross, so livestock guardian. If you think you can give Bear what he needs please contact me and we can talk. Bear will go for free to the right home.
