Description
Dartaniel is a lovely miniature Dachshund currently being assessed and prepared for his forever home. He came to us through Applegarth Dog Rescue to work on some behaviours that had developed in his previous home, including resource guarding around sofas and beds, separation anxiety, and a habit of jumping up at people's legs for attention in order to be picked up.
Since being with us, Dartaniel has made fantastic progress. He has been successfully crate trained, which has greatly helped him settle and feel secure. His separation anxiety has improved significantly now that he has a consistent routine, and he happily relaxes and sleeps when left alone for appropriate periods. We have also stopped responding to attention-seeking jumping behaviour and no longer pick him up on demand. Instead, we choose when to invite him onto our laps, helping him learn appropriate ways to interact with people.
As part of his training, Dartaniel is no longer allowed on sofas or beds. This is helping him break old habits and prepare for a smooth transition into his new home. Any adopter will need to continue these boundaries and routines to ensure his success.
Dartaniel is an affectionate little dog who forms strong bonds with his people and loves a cuddle. Once he knows and trusts you, he is incredibly loving and loyal. He has excellent recall and enjoys being part of family life.
His ideal home would be with a single person or a couple who can provide clear, consistent boundaries and continue the positive training he has received. Although Dartaniel is very good with my four-year-old son and has shown no issues around him, in agreement with the rescue, we are looking for an adult-only home or a home with older children aged 15 and over.
Dartaniel is looking for a patient, understanding owner who will continue to build his confidence, advocate for him, and help him maintain the wonderful progress he has made. In return, he will be a devoted and affectionate companion.
To help Dartaniel settle successfully into his new home, there will be a few management rules that adopters must be willing to follow. Dartaniel will need to sleep in his crate at night for the first 3–4 weeks while he adjusts to his new environment and builds a relationship with his new owner. This routine has played a huge part in his progress and will help set him up for success.
For the first week, Dartaniel should wear a lightweight lead and collar indoors at all times when supervised. This allows him to be safely guided around the home and moved when necessary without the need to pick him up unexpectedly. Once a bond has been established and his new owner feels confident handling him, this can gradually be phased out.
These guidelines are not permanent but are an important part of helping Dartaniel transition smoothly into his new home and maintain all the positive progress he has made.
