Description
Help needed. This is not a decision we have taken lightly however our cat Spyro is desperately unhappy in his environment.
Spyro has additional needs. He was born with congenital cataracts and was clinically blind. After waiting for him to mature, we opted to have the cataract removal surgery to give him his eyesight. Before his surgery; he was struggling with inappropriate urination and not getting along with my other, older cat. I thought the surgery would fix this as well as give him a better quality of life, however it has not. He has healed beautifully and we went through a lot together. He fought me on every single eyedrop ( he is as strong as an ox and as strong willed as one too!). Through it all, we developed a really close bond.
Unfortunately his fights with my other cat have become nasty and he is frequently injured. He has scratches on his nose as we speak. He spends his time hissing, growling and hiding whilst the other one picks on him. Because of his stress, he is peeing so often it’s become unmanageable for both him and us. I would be failing him keeping him in this home that he is not happy in.
We have tried felliway plug ins, more interactivity, more attention, more frequent tray changing etc however nothing is working. I am absolutely heartbroken because he is a lovely cat but short of giving him medication for the rest of his life to relax him; I’ve ran out of ideas, and money from replacing all the things he’s pee’d on. I am 100% sure that if he lived in a home with no other pets, was allowed a soft surface to curl up and sleep on, and allowed to live out his days in solitude, he wouldn’t have these accidents. He knows how to use a tray, he uses his all the time, he is just too worked up to get it right every time.
He is 2.5 years old, male, neutered, chipped and vaccinated. I’ve taken care of him to the best of my ability. He doesn’t like being picked up or handled because he has no depth perception so the height from the floor unsettles him. Whilst he has his sight, he is very short sighted so you won’t really catch him jumping on surfaces because he can’t judge distance. Once you’ve established a relationship with him, he will come and snuggle with you on his own terms, and providing he can profile you with a finger sniff, he might even allow you to scratch his chin and head!
He has been raised indoors and would not be able to go out so regular tray maintenance is essential for him.
With his sight, it would not be safe for him to go out.
I truly hope someone can help us and Spyro. I love him so much that I’m willing to rehome him in a home he’s comfortable in.
If you got to the end, thank you. I hope true animal lovers come to his rescue
