Description

We've had our handsome, sweet Corgi - Napster - since he was 8 weeks old. He's always been a complicated dog. He hasn't been able to go to the vets the past few years because he'll bite, and we can't always get a muzzle on him because he gets so anxious in the process. He's a resource guarder, and has always gotten a bit nasty when you try to get him to drop something he shouldn't be eating (eg a rotten apple) or get him down from a space he's guarding (eg his favourite sofa). To help control these behaviours in him, we've worked with various trainers (including residential training for reactive dogs). This has helped - using the repeated command 'bed' he will go to his pen from anywhere in the house, and that keeps him happy and us all safe when he's getting overstimulated. However, he still cannot be around children. While he's pretty good most of the time with my husband and I, who love and understand him, the bite risk is way too high with our 3yo son. Really, the relationship between us and Napster has never been the same since I was pregnant. His bite tendency increased dramatically, and he seems to feel displaced and threatened when we assert authority over him since. He can't be around small people whose movements are unpredictable and the waving around toys and loud noises make him feel unsafe. We're now aiming for a second child and the situation is simply untenable for us anymore. He's good on the lead - we have a slip lead used to give him feedback if he is pulling on the lead too much or barks at another dog. He is generally quite friendly with other dogs and gets on with them well unless they behave aggressively towards him first. He needs a home with owner(s) experienced with reactive dogs, who can understand his needs, spend a lot of time building trust with him, and invest in his training and setting good boundaries with him. We are simply not those people anymore; our son must come first. Our jobs have also forced us to travel a lot and Napster needs companionship. His situation currently is unfair to him, and we know he could do a lot better with a no children home and experienced owner(s) who can develop a bond with him. His recall is very good and he's fine being let off lead in larger open spaces as well. He loves a run around and exercise generally, though he can sometimes be stubborn on very windy or rainy days. He can truly be very sweet when he feels relaxed, licking your face and ears and rolling on his back for pats like a puppy. We love Napster very much and wish we didn't have to rehome him, but we know it's the right thing to do. We'd love to hear from the right person or couple interested in going on a walk with us and Napster, and getting to know him/us. We want to share everything we know about him, to make sure Napster lands in the right forever home!
