Description

Meet beautiful, loving, hilarious Ozzy. We adopted Ozzy from Greece around 2 months ago. We all love him very much but we were told he was OK with cats. However, it turns out he has a very high prey drive and we have two older cats in the home. Ozzy was found starving on the street in Greece when he was very small & taken in by a loving family who are known to us. When he came to England, he was understandably a bit bewildered but with lots of love, reassurance and guidance it didn't take him long at all to settle in and he quickly became an established part of our family. Ozzy just loves people - us and all the people we meet on our walks. His favourite thing after having a good run in the woods is to snuggle up on the couch for a snooze and as long as he's had his exercise and been stimulated in the right way, he's happy to sleep on his bed or on the couch all evening as long as his humans are near! We have two teenagers who he adores and a busy home that's full of people coming in and out including our teenagers friends and he loves everyone. He was a bit boisterous with small children in the beginning, getting over excited and jumping up to play but he's learned to keep all 4 paws on the ground with little ones when they're around. However, as Ozzy's excitement can sometimes get the better of him, I'd recommend a home with older children or teenagers. Unfortunately he hasn't got on well with our cats from the moment they met and we've had to keep them separate which is why we've decided to rehome him. I had a dog trainer come to the house to observe his behaviour around the cats and she confirmed he has a very high prey drive and it wasn't safe for them to be together. We kept Ozzy for a further month after this as we really love him and were hoping he'd accept that the cats are part of the home but this hasn't happened. Ozzy loves other dogs too but as he's getting older and his hormones are kicking in, he's sometimes starting to react to other boy dogs. However, this is only sometimes and he can usually be distracted by food whilst walking past on his lead. When he lived in Greece, a neighbour had a girl dog who used to come over and play and she was his absolute favourite so possibly a home with an older girl dog would be a good fit. Ozzy is very food oriented and his absolute favourite is roast chicken which is what I use for training. His recall was non existent when he came but I think that was more to do with him not knowing who we were rather than ability as it only took a few days (and lots of chicken!) for me to be able to let him off the lead and him to come straight back. However, as his hormones are kicking in, his prey drive is getting stronger so I'm currently not letting him off the lead. The vet said the prey drive might calm down with neutering but that wouldn't be until February (this is too long for us to wait as the poor cats are very stressed out). Ozzy does have lots of energy but as long as he gets his hour/hour and a half in the woods in the morning and half hour to 45 mins in the evening with a bit of playing while I work throughout the day, he's happy and totally relaxed. He was quite destructive in the beginning if we left him but I think this was an anxiety thing as it's stopped now. I usually give him a yak chew or a Kong with meat at the bottom and then apple or carrot and peanut butter to keep him occupied while I work but equally he's happy to just go to his bed and snooze for a couple of hours after his morning walk. Ozzy thrives off positive rewards, love and affection but also needs an owner who is comfortable setting firm boundaries as he can still be a boisterous pup and is coming into his adolescence. We're not sure of his parentage but we think a lot of lab, some staffy and some other kind of terrier as his tail curls when he's tracking voles up on the Heath! We will miss him so much but are really hopeful there's a lovely person, couple or family out there who will give him a loving home. Please don't be offended if I ask you questions or ask to meet you before letting Ozzy go to you as he's already had so much upheaval in his young life, this next home has to be his forever one.
