The Boerboel, is a Mastiff-like dog native to South Africa where these large dogs were bred to work on farms and as guard dogs. Translated, their name means "farm dog." They are very impressive looking dogs, and although imposing, they boast of being gentle giants as long as they are well socialised and properly trained from a young age. For this reason, they are definitely not a good choice for first-time owners. However, the Boerboel is a good choice for someone who is familiar with the needs and training requirements of the breed or this type of very large Mastiff dog and who has enough indoor and outdoor space for them to roam freely.

Yes, Boerboels are legal in the UK and are not included in the list of banned breeds under the UK Dangerous Dogs Act or its recent amendments. While they are powerful mastiff-type dogs, they are not subject to breed-specific legislation in the UK. However, owners must always ensure their Boerboel is under proper control to comply with legal requirements.
