About Kuma
Kuma and Robin (see our other dogs for adoption) are seeking new homes due to a significant change in family circumstances. Although they have lived together for years, they don’t require a home together and their family feels comfortable separating them. After years of being part of an active household, he is now spending long hours on his own, which he finds difficult. He’s a sociable, engaged dog who thrives when he has company, structure and regular time outdoors.
Kuma is happiest when he’s outside. He is not a high speed sprinter by any means, but has plenty of stamina for a long hike and would happily walk for miles if given the chance. He walks beautifully on the lead, has excellent recall, and is attentive on walks, especially if there are treats involved. He’s well mannered with other dogs and calm around livestock too. His absolute favourite place is the beach, but a good forest trail or countryside ramble comes a close second.
Indoors, Kuma enjoys calm company and steady routine. He’s housetrained and knows an impressive range of commands and tricks, from basics like sit and wait to more advanced tricks like sit pretty, speak and play dead! He also attended puppy school and sniffer dog classes and has thrived with some focus and mental enrichment. It helps that he is very food motivated and enjoys training, especially when the reward is a tasty chew! While he’s generally good with food and toys, he has shown some guarding behaviour around high value items in the presence of another dog, so this would need to be managed.
Kuma enjoys the company of other dogs when out and about and generally plays well, but he is also comfortable doing his own thing. He’s a confident, friendly dog who enjoys meeting new people and absolutely loves visitors. At home, he sometimes gets a little overexcited when people arrive, so a baby gate or some gentle management at the door can help him settle more quickly.
He hasn’t had much experience around children but has shown no signs of concern during limited and well managed interactions. Due to his size and tendency to get excited, he would be better suited to a home with older children or adults.
Like all dogs, there are a few things Kuma dislikes. He’s not a fan of vet visits or being handled for grooming or medical care and it has taken time to build up a level of trust with his current vet that has made these situations manageable. He also does not wear a harness and becomes defensive if one is introduced, so his new family will need to work around this and take a gentle, reward based approach to any handling. As he is described as a dream to walk by his current family, a harness shouldn’t need introducing for day to day walks anyway.
Kuma would be best suited to a home where someone is around most of the day and able to involve him in daily life. He would love regular walks, outdoor adventures and trips to dog-friendly cafes or the pub. A rural or semi-rural home with access to open space would suit him well, though he has also previously enjoyed city life and coped well with trips into London.
He cannot live with cats and has a chicken allergy, so careful dietary management is essential.
Kuma is affectionate, bright and full of potential. With the right environment and continued structure, he’ll thrive as part of a calm and active home that can give him the attention and exercise he needs.
