We rescued Wilson in August 2024 due to the previous owners health and work commitments.
we had a 2 week window where we thought we may have to give him back due to him being anxious around my son. The previous owner did not want him back and said to pass him on but we couldn’t do that. We persevered, was patient and tried our best to make him feel safe.
Months later and he is more relaxed and part of our family. He is still anxious around our son and at certain times with adults or other dogs but we have learnt what triggers this- being hugged, having his feel stroked or nails trimmed( this is distressing for him), being on the lead and a dog coming into his space and being picked up. He loves to sit on our bed with us but he can’t jump so we have to pick him up. This is when he would show what we call his gremlin teeth but we know this is harmless. It is a warning that he doesn’t like something. Wilson is loving and wants to lay next to you whenever he can. He loves the sun, blankets, treats and walks. He loves being stroked and if he can get in bed with you, even better.
He has never shown aggression to me or my husband so we do feel he would be happiest with a single person/ couple or family with older children.
Wilson is used to being at home while we work and he is toilet trained. I wonder if that contributes to his anxiety but know that although we do not want to rehome him, the main reason for us getting a dog is for our son and we do not want to worry that he may react negatively one time. So this is the best option for us sadly.
