Description
Kane is a large, four-year-old male currently located at Our Safe Haven in Nantwich, Cheshire. He is neutered.
Kane came to Pawprints kennels in Cheshire in December 2022 from another rescue when he was around one year old. He was adopted in February 2023 but surrendered just over a month later in March 2023 due to his behaviour in the home. He moved to Our Safe Haven in May 2023 and has been at the Cheshire kennels since then.
In the home Kane was very reactive and unsettled. He was unsure of the family’s son and reactive to strangers, barking and growling at visitors and at noises outside the house such as car doors and the post being delivered. He also became over-excited during play, biting and jumping up, and has a history of mouthing that can escalate to nipping and leave bruises. He did not show guarding behaviour over food and would wait calmly while being fed.
Kane can still be reactive to strangers at the kennels, particularly if they approach him too quickly, but he is affectionate and goofy with people he knows well. He enjoys fuss and will try to sit on your lap for cuddles. He is very food-orientated, intelligent and eager to please, responding well to clear boundaries and positive reinforcement. He knows sit, lie down, touch, go to bed, get down, look at me and wait, and waits patiently for his food.
Kane enjoys walks and becomes excited when he sees his lead. He can pull at first but settles quickly once out. His reactivity on walks has improved greatly through structured training — he has taken part in parallel walks and can now pass other dogs, cyclists and people calmly when given space and reassurance.
Kane’s muzzle training is ongoing. He started by confidently putting his nose into the muzzle for treats and now wears it fastened on walks without trying to remove it. His new home will need to continue this work to maintain his confidence.
Kane currently shares a kennel with another dog and they get on well, though they are fed separately. He may be able to live with a calm, confident dog following careful introductions. He cannot live with cats and has shown a high prey drive, chasing birds.
Kane cannot live with children, including visiting children. He does not use a crate having previously been locked in one as punishment, and this must not be reintroduced. He destroys soft toys but enjoys interactive and durable toys such as Kongs and licky mats.
Kane needs a very experienced, adult-only home with people who are confident handling large reactive dogs. His new family will need to continue his muzzle work and positive training approach and be patient as he settles. With consistent boundaries and understanding, Kane has shown that he can relax, learn and reveal his affectionate, goofy personality with those he trusts.
