Description

This is an extremely hard choice for me and my partner to make, and this post is only to see potential intrest currently. So please reach out if you feel you could be a perfect fit for him. Please give us details on your home, experience with dogs (greyhounds specifically would make you the top of our list) and if you'd be open to allowing us to keep contact to see him grow. Because we want him to go to a serious home, it is reflected in the asking price. However, if you seem to be the perfect fit will will consider lowering this price. If we think you fit we would ask if you could visit him a good few times before taking him home, with a weeks trial period in your home (provided a deposit is made), to ease him to you and ensure you're confident he is right for you. We would have no issue taking him back if it doesn't happen to work. Mako came to us at 8 weeks from a litter intercepted from the racing industry. Sadly we do not know his parents. I personally trained with him and he became a loving member of our furry family. As many greyhounds he is a nervous but extremely sweet boy, loves kisses and belly rubs. He knows many commands, most importantly settle, sit and on me. He has also grown up alongside our 2 cats and has grown found of our oldest who he tends to kiss, however he still has preydrive when outside toward unknown cats and smaller creatures as expected. We have him on a 30 metre long lead at our nearby park, he gets one big run and play with a flirt pole and then a few shorter on lead walks throughout the day. He heels nicely so long as it's a route he knows well. (New routes are of course very exciting for puppies! But with treats and consistency you can have him heel anywhere). Our reason for potentially finding him a new home is a sad one. I am currently going through a health scare which may be cancer at only 21, this has lead to me being unable to work and therefore these past few weeks my partner has had to take the brunt of work with Mako. My partner tries his best but doesn't much know how to handle him alone. I had planned to grow alongside him so it hurts me greatly to be thinking of this only 9 months after getting him. I've put in countless hours of sweat and tears bonding and training with him. We had him in puppy school during his younger months and I spent many hours simply sitting and watching the world with him during his critical period. Due to his age, he is in the peak of the teenage phase and is currently going through a fear period and boundary testing. This has resulted in him showing nervous anxiety toward dogs, within certain radius causing him to bark and regression elsewhere in his training. I will also add very early on, we had the misfortune of encountering a reactive dog whose owner walked close to him. They didn't get closer than a roads distance from us, but he was very young at the time and the barking did shake his confidence. I spent months reworking his confidence and up until this recent fear period he was making amazing progress. Fear periods simply require patience, and not trying to push him into environments he is overly triggered by to keep him under threshold. This can simply be watching the world and positively reinforcing when he seems relaxed. His training, mainly 'on me' and 'settle' with high value treats (liver and chicken) do work well to get his attention but he requires a lot more exposure to dogs and consistency than we can currently provide given my decline. Once he ages and is neutered, this fear will most definitely diffuse and he'll become even more of a sleepy potato than he is. He is crate trained, clicker trained, knows 'yes' is for doing something correctly, microchipped, up to date with vaccinations, flea and wormed. He would come with his crate, food and water bowl, dry food, favourite toys, harness and martingale collar. He knows the command 'go toilet', and is happy to settle down with a pizzel or baked bone. We currently only give him a blanket in his crate, as he aged he began in a puppy like fashion, destroying most beds we tried to introduce. That being said we have a large bean bag he loves to lounge on while out of his crate, so you could very easily teach him to place on a bed outside of his crate. We are in an apartment environment but very often house sit with a garden so it isn't a new concept to him. As with many puppies he requires a decent amount of time and patience. Therefore we will only consider those who either work from home or can provide evidence they will have enough time for him daily. We would love for him to go to a home with a garden as it has been something we regret not providing. We had planned moving to a house and garden next year, so he would've only been in an apartment for a year. With my health this may not be an option anymore. Again, feel free to ask any questions. I want to remind anyone interested it can take a dog 3 months to settle into a new home. So keep in mind these first few months may be tough, especially with him being a teen, meaning you'd need ample time. I will of course be on standby to help if needed.
