Boerboels can make excellent family dogs when properly trained and socialised. Boerboels are banned or restricted in certain countries mainly because of concerns related to their large size, strength, and protective nature, which can be perceived as a risk to public safety. Some jurisdictions apply breed-specific legislation targeting mastiff-type or bully breeds, often as a precautionary measure against incidents involving powerful guard dogs.

Generally, Boerboels are larger and physically stronger than Pitbulls due to their mastiff heritage, which includes greater muscle mass and bite force. While Pitbulls are also strong dogs relative to their size, Boerboels possess a more robust build, making them typically more powerful overall.
