Description

🐾 SMALL DOG. BIG EARS. SURPRISINGLY LITTLE DRAMA. Meet Olive. Olive is a six-month-old, black-and-tan standard dachshund who appears to have missed the memo about how dachshunds are supposed to behave. She’s not yappy, doesn’t spend her days trembling at imaginary threats and has yet to declare war on the postman. Instead, she’s an exceptionally bright, confident and laid-back little dog who approaches life with the quiet assurance of someone who knows exactly what’s going on but doesn’t feel the need to make a fuss about it. While her best mate Spud operates at approximately 150mph, Olive prefers a more considered pace. She’ll happily follow him on his adventures, although she occasionally appears to question his life choices. Don’t mistake her relaxed nature for laziness. She’s a clever little thing who already comes to her name, knows sit, walks to heel and has lovely recall for her age. She’s been raised in a busy family home with children, dogs, cats and a rabbit, as well as the usual assortment of farm livestock. Very little fazes her. Both her parents are pedigree standard dachshunds from working farm lines, although Olive’s litter was not KC registered. Olive has been brought up as a proper dog rather than a handbag accessory. She’ll happily swim in the river, explore the countryside and get thoroughly muddy. She’s also accustomed to farm machinery, including travelling in the tractor and accompanying us on the quad, although we’ve been careful to manage this appropriately given her age and the importance of protecting her developing back. However, she draws the line at being cold. Olive comes complete with her own winter wardrobe, including a waterproof coat, because apparently being a rugged country dog doesn’t mean having to suffer unnecessarily. She’s also a proper little cuddle monster who loves affection and is more than happy to abandon her outdoor adventures in favour of a warm lap. Her toilet training remains a work in progress. She understands the general concept but occasionally chooses to interpret the rules rather creatively. Management remains optimistic as late toilet training is a feature of the breed sadly. Sadly, due to a change in my health, we’re looking for a wonderful new home for Olive. She’s a genuinely lovely little dog: intelligent, affectionate, confident and beautifully easygoing. She’s still a puppy, with plenty to learn, but she’s already developing into a fantastic companion. Finding the right home for her is our absolute priority. Six months old. Excellent manners. Loves swimming. Refuses to be cold. Comes with seasonal outerwear. 🐶 Also seeking alternative employment is Spud, Olive’s best mate and our two-year-old working-type Jack Russell. He’s considerably faster, more enthusiastic and more convinced of his own importance. Both are looking for wonderful new homes and are advertised separately. They do not need to be rehomed together, although enquiries about either (or both!) are very welcome. šŸ¾ā¤ļø

Pros

Extremely affectionate and loyal little dogs
Very intelligent Dachshunds learn quickly and know how to please
Fun-loving and playful by nature
Energetic and feisty Dachshunds like to be kept entertained

Cons

Not the best choice for first time owners because Dachshunds often have a mind of their own
Care must be taken with puppies because they must not be allowed to jump up or down from anywhere because it could damage their backs and joints
They are prone to putting on too much weight if not given enough daily exercise
The breed is known to suffer from quite a few health concerns so vet bills can be high and why pet insurance is so important for anyone owning a Dachshund
