Description
Meet Yogi
Yogi is a young chocolate Labrador (possibly with Springer Spaniel) who came into our lives after a very difficult start. We rescued Yogi from Wales when he was just 8 weeks old. Before that, he had already experienced significant trauma—he was found abandoned in a bin at only 2 weeks old and required urgent veterinary care. As a result of his injuries, Yogi had one eye removed and has damage to his upper jaw, which has caused his front teeth to grow deformed.
Despite everything he has been through, Yogi is a loving, affectionate, and playful pup. He is friendly when meeting people, full of personality, and absolutely adores our older labrador. He enjoys companionship, play, and being involved in daily life. He is house trained and clearly lets you know when he needs to go outside. He is also very good off lead, though he is beginning to pull on the lead and would benefit from continued leash training. Yogi is fully vaccinated, wormed, and flea-treated, also crate trained.
However, while Yogi has been with us, he has shown ongoing resource guarding behaviours, particularly around food, chews, and occasionally toys. These behaviours include stiffening, growling, lunging, and snapping. There has never been a bite, but despite consistent effort and precautions, these behaviours have not improved.
Yogi currently lives in a home with three children (youngest 18 months, oldest 12) and another dog. With young children, no matter how careful we are, the risk is simply too high. Children are unpredictable, and I could never forgive myself if something were to happen. While precautions are in place, this situation is not fair to Yogi or to our family.
Additionally, although Yogi loves our other dog, the feeling is not mutual. He can be quite dominant toward her, and she does not enjoy his company, which adds further stress to the household.
This has been an incredibly painful decision. We feel we may have bitten off more than we can chew, even with prior experience owning dogs. With time, focused training, and the right environment, I truly believe Yogi could become the dog I know he has the potential to be. Unfortunately, with young children and limited time to address his behavioural needs properly, we cannot take that risk.
With a very heavy heart, we are looking for a new home for Yogi that is:
• Adult-only (no children)
• Able to work patiently with his food guarding and mouthiness
• Ideally understanding of dogs who have experienced early trauma
This is not a decision made lightly. I want nothing more than the very best for Yogi. For that reason, I will be selective and may ask questions or want to meet before committing. Please don’t be offended—this is about ensuring Yogi goes to the right home where he can truly thrive.
Unfortunately, that home is not ours. If children were not involved in this decision yogi would not going anywhere. I'm devastated that it has come to this. Currently 6 months old. this is not a ploy to make money i genuinely want the best for this young boy
