Boerboels can make excellent family dogs when properly trained and socialised. They are known to be loyal, protective, and intelligent, making them good companions for families experienced with large breeds. Due to their size and guarding instincts, early socialisation and firm leadership are essential to ensure they behave well around children and other pets.

Boerboels are banned or restricted in certain countries mainly because of concerns related to their large size, strength, and protective nature, which can be perceived as a risk to public safety. Some jurisdictions apply breed-specific legislation targeting mastiff-type or bully breeds, often as a precautionary measure against incidents involving powerful guard dogs.

Generally, Boerboels are larger and physically stronger than Pitbulls due to their mastiff heritage, which includes greater muscle mass and bite force. While Pitbulls are also strong dogs relative to their size, Boerboels possess a more robust build, making them typically more powerful overall. However, strength alone does not determine a dog's temperament or suitability as a pet.
