Description
Jess is a medium sized Romanian street male dog that arrived at our Cheshire Kennels in April 24 and was there until moving to our Essex kennels in September 25. He is microchipped and neutered. He is not up to date with his vaccinations but this is being supported by the rescue.
When he arrived he was very shutdown and would cower from people. He would also toilet in fear. He has improved a lot but he still is hesitant, his love of food is used to encourage him. He has never shown aggression. He has improved a lot at the Essex Kennels as it is a much quieter environment. A foster or adopter will understand that he will show limited progress at the kennels but a quieter environment will bring him round quicker. He has only known kennel life so is not toilet trained nor is he used to household sounds, and comings and goings.
Behaviour Disclosure
Jess is a gentle, nervous boy who will need a patient and understanding home to help him build confidence at his own pace. He does not show any signs of aggression and has a very sweet nature, but he can be overwhelmed by new people and environments.
Temperament & Handling
Jess does not naturally approach people when they enter his kennel and will usually retreat to his bedroom or another place where he feels safe. He has never growled at or bitten anyone. When food is present, his confidence increases significantly and he becomes excited and vocal, showing his strong motivation for food.
He will allow a collar, slip lead, and harness to be put on, but he is very submissive and may roll onto his back, which can make harnessing difficult at times.
Walking & Confidence
Jess lacks confidence on the lead. He will walk calmly out of the barn but often freezes once outside, lying down or rolling onto his back and refusing to move forward. Gentle encouragement may result in a few steps, but he generally finds the outside world overwhelming at present. When returning to his kennel, however, he walks back confidently and without hesitation. Jess has not yet experienced much external stimulation such as traffic, busy areas, or unfamiliar environments due to his reluctance to walk. With consistency, patience, and trust-building, he is expected to make progress.
Other Dogs
Jess currently shares a kennel with another dog, Bramble, and has shown no signs of aggression. They are comfortable together and will sometimes share beds. Jess does need to be fed separately as he is highly food-motivated and may attempt to steal another dog’s food. He does not require another dog in the home but may benefit from living with a calm, confident canine companion.
Children & Other Animals
Jess has not been child tested. Due to his nervous nature, he would be best suited to a home with older, dog-savvy children 14+ who can respect his space. He has not formerly met cats during his time in the UK but had in Romania. With an experienced home he could live with dog savvy cats.
Kennel Behaviour & Alone Time
Jess does toilet in his kennel but has not shown any destructive behaviours. He does not display signs of separation anxiety and has previously been left alone for extended periods without issue. He settles well when left with a long-lasting chew or treat.
Jess' carers say 'Jess is a lovely dog and although very nervous he doesn't appear have a bad or aggressive bone in his body. He is a massive foodie and makes us all laugh at the kennels at how excited he gets over meal times. He just needs someone to understand that he may need a little time and patience'.
