Description

Gomez is a Black American Bulldog X. He is approximately 2 years old. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Gomez has no ongoing known health issues. Gomez came into our care as part of a welfare case where multiple dogs were removed from a home in December 2024 when his owner signed him over to us. After many months his owner got in touch and informed us that Gomez was actually an exempt XL bully as his owner had exempted him as a precaution in case he met type when he got older. This meant that the owner rehomed him illegally to us but by this time he had been away from his home for over 30 days and his exemption was now void. Also, from looking at Gomez we were confident that he did not meet the characteristics of type. Unfrotunately, there is no clear process for removing a dog off the exemption list so we sought advice and were instructed that Gomez exemption was void and it was suggested to have an assessment carried to confirm if he met type or not. Gomez was assessed in January 2026 and it was confirmed that he does not meet type. We were then instructed that Gomez could now legally be rehomed. He firstly went to a boarding kennels and then came under the care of PPTF kennels (OSH). Veterinary care was sought for Gomez as he had multiple scabs, sores and patches of bald skin. Skin scrapes were done and sent to the lab but these came back as inconclusive. He was treated with a strong 3 monthly flea, tick and wormer treatment as well as for mange. It was unclear if his vaccinations were in date or ever started so a full restart vaccination course was given. He had a further veterinary consultation for a limp in his hind legs. It was concluded that it was just multiple sores on his paws. Gomez was taken to the OSH vets at the start of January 2025 due to him showing a deterioration. He had blood tests and stool samples. He tested positive for Giardia and Toxocara and was given medication for this. As Gomez's skin was bad when he arrived at the kennels he was given oat baths and was rubbed with coconut oil daily. He also had a derma supplement in his food. Gomez's feet were wrapped daily and cleaned. Gomez he became more accepting of this and started to allow kennel staff to handle him. Gomez was initially very reserved. He appeared to always have his guard up and flinched if you raised hands/legs in his vicinity. He was very wary of people in his space. A staff member was cleaning his kennel and then went to stroke him. Gomez was spooked and nipped the staff member. This caught her finger. He nipped other staff members when they gave him treats thinking it was a food. Kennel staff said Gomez did not give warning for nipping and would also rag the lead. He tried ragging another staff members coat which caused their arm to bruise. Gomez also latched onto a harness which was on his kennel which he ragged aggressively. Gomez moved into private boarding kennels in July 2025 where he has resided ever since. After months in a busy kennel block Gomez was becoming stressed. He was reactive to other dogs when walking the kennel line with staff. He was moved to a quieter area where he has now relaxed more and has become a much calmer dog. He has not nipped anyone since being in private kennels and has shown no food aggression with his meals. He can snap up in the air and jump up a lot but has shown no aggression with kennel staff. Gomez accepts collar/harness and lead but he can try and bite the lead sometimes. He walks really well on the lead with no pulling. He can be little scared of some people and does bark at dogs he sees. He has not met any children on his walks. Gomez has been known to tear up his bed with boredom so he will need lots of toys and brain games to keep him busy in his new home. He will also need to get daily physical excersise on walks. Gomez has probably been left without food in the past so does snatch food and treats from your hand. The kennels have tried to teach him to be gentle. This is something that his new home will need to be aware of and work with him to continue this training. As Gomez has been living in kennels his toilet training will need a refresher in his new home which will be easily done with a clear, sheduled toileting routine. As he has spent a long period of time in kennels Gomez will need someone around most of the day. This is so that he can build a bond with his new family. Any alone time will need to be built up very gradually over time and monitored to ensure Gomez is comfortable being left alone. He may be susceptible to separation anxiety once he has settled in. Gomez will need an experienced home who can offer him what he needs but take things at his own pace as he will need some adjustment time when he comes out of kennels. Gomez will need to be walked on a harness and be given some additional positive training with sights and sounds he hasnt seen for a while. Gomez is unable to live with dogs or other pets. Although Gomez hasn't met children since being in kennels it is felt that he could live with older children that have been used to having a dog before. Gomez has a lot of love to give and is a good boy. He is now ready to find his forever home where he will be given patience, time, reassurance and be allowed to decompress after a long period in a kennel environment. He needs someone with experince to guide him, show him what is expected of him using positive reinforcement and give him all the love he has missed out on. He needs to go at his own pace to ensure he is comfortable with the positive life changes he is experiencing.
